Almost exactly one year after the OfficeMax at Brentwood Pointe closed — May 16, 2015 — the Office Depot at 8730 Manchester Road, in Brentwood, is set to close as well.

An employee at the Brentwood store said the closing/consolidation was a result of competition from other big box office supply stores. She was telling customers to visit Office Depot stores in Richmond Heights and Kirkwood. The Office Depot at 8730 Manchester Road is set to close on May 14.

The Brentwood Pointe OfficeMax closed following the merger of OfficeMax and Office Depot. Now Office Depot and Staples are attempting a $6.3 billion merger, according to Marketplace. Their lawyers are facing anti-trust lawyers for the Federal Trade Commission in U.S. District Court. Read the full post in Marketplace.

The St. Louis Business Journal reported on Twitter that the Office Depot in Crestwood is also closing, and another reports that an Office Max at Loughborough Commons is closing too.

Note: This closing was discovered after first going to the OfficeMax, at Brentwood Pointe, to take a photo of signs that directs customers to the Office Depot in Richmond Heights. Brentwood resident Barry Williams sent an email to 40 South, wondering why Office Depot/OfficeMax didn’t send people to the Brentwood store, on Manchester, which is closer. He said he had emailed city administrator, Bola Akande about it, who told him the city asked the corporation that same question about a year ago and never got a reply.

Now that the Office Depot, at 8730 Manchester Road, in Brentwood is closing, Williams wonders — did Office Depot not promote its other Brentwood store because it knew it would be closing? Or did Office Depot not promote its other Brentwood store, and this hurt sales to the point that it had to be closed?

  1. The plan was to eventually close the Depot at Manchester and Brentwood after the location’s lease expired. The store in Richmond Heights is higher volume/larger and pulls more profit.

    • Perhaps inaccurate, but I perceive sarcasm in the above comment. The perceived sarcasm seems a criticism of decisions that led to the land use in that location. To my memory as a 60 year resident of Brentwood, that property was utilized for many years as a Schnuck’s grocery store. I think that was the original use but I was so young that might be wrong. Schnuck’s operated there for many years. As time goes on business plans evolve and Schnucks developed the larger “big box” at Brentwood and Manchester to continue to serve the community in the changing grocery industry. That meant the original property needed to be recycled to other use. This is all a natural process of life cycles of both business and real estate usage. If I am accurately reading the sarcasm then I must conclude the point is that the original decision made in the 1950’s or 60s to allow Schnucks to invest in Brentwood and serve the community with a then “modern” grocery supplier was actually bad for the community.

      • John, 30 years ago, Schnucks was where the Ace Hardware is. Kroger was building a store at the current location of Schnucks. Kroger pulled their operations out of Missouri, so Schnucks took over the location.

  2. I used this store for all my ink, paper and things like furniture etc..I’m not going to drive elsewhere, more online business to competitors
