Maplewood resident Steven Moseley has picked up a petition to run for city council, he said in an email on Monday. Moseley will be running against incumbent David Cerven for the open Ward 1 Maplewood City Council seat.

Cerven later dropped out of the race.

Moseley sent this statement:

He is running for city council because he believes the relationship between the school district, the businesses and the residents are imperative to quality of life in a community like Maplewood.

He believes that these three groups are functioning well, but could be strengthened, especially the involvement of the residents. Steven has been the pastor of Maplewood Baptist Church for the past 12 years and his family has lived in Ward 1 the entire time.

He knows a lot of the people in the ward, but looks forward to getting to know many more in the weeks ahead. He knows people are visiting our city for the great businesses we have, but they are moving to our city, and becoming residents, for the great schools we have.

Both of his children have attended MRH for most of their education. His daughter is currently a senior at MRH High School. His son is a student at Saint Louis University.  His wife, Lisa, is the Program Director for Lydia’s House, a domestic violence transitional housing program in St. Louis.

In addition to this, he has served as a chaplain for the Maplewood Police Department since 2005 and served on the Maplewood Community Betterment Foundation for nine years, including six as vice-president and one as president.
