The Maplewood Richmond Heights girls soccer team won the Class 1 District 2 championship game Tuesday over Metro at MRH. It’s the first time the girls Blue Devils team has won Districts.

MRH soundly defeated Metro 6-0, with two goals in the first period and four in the second.

Lauren Wissman, and Lacy Thomas scored in the first period. In the second, Wismann and Thomas each added another and Caroline Barron scored two. Goal keeper Emma Sabath had the shutout, with five saves.

Coach Amber Jordan has been the coach 16 years. She said they have made it to the final before, but never won it. “We had to fight through it yesterday and today, but they prevailed,” she said. “We have a lot of young talent. The girls started a lot earlier in their careers. We have some good soccer talent that came, and they started gelling around the middle of the year.”

Next is the sectional game on Wednesday, May 24. The location is to be determined. Jordan said the game could be at MRH or down south. The winner there advances to state semi-finals and finals in Kansas City.

MRH’s Sophie Roy battles Metro’s Grace Panicola in the first period.
