Watch your grass height, the law is

In this season of regular rains and rapidly growing lawns at least Maplewood and Richmond Heights are being proactive to ensure that residents keep the grass cut.

A Maplewood resident was cited recently for having grass longer than city ordinance allows, which is 12 inches. Though he said his grass is so thin, he might have a total of 50 individual pieces of grass that exceed that.

Maplewood ordinance states: “The The owner, lessee, renter, head of a household or person having control of any lot or tract of land, or any part thereof, shall not allow or maintain on any such lot or tract of land or any part thereof any growth of grass or weeds to a height of 12 inches or over…”

The Brentwood ordinance, under “nuisances prohibited,” defines the maximum height as: “Grass, brush and weeds more than eight (8) inches in height.”

The city of Richmond Heights allows grass to be seven inches long, and placed a reminder in its latest newsletter.

  1. Contact local code compliance and send photos. When neighbors don’t care for their properties it invites pests and is an overall hazard during fire season. Be careful some neighbors are not able to cut their own lawn due to health reasons I would try offering to cut it for them first for free

  2. So, I have a neighbor in Richmond Heights who has not cut his backyard in 2 years. It is surrounded by a privacy fence but by midsummer is taller than the fence and pushes thru the slats and hangs over the top. He is not friendly at all so I feel talking to him about it is not an option. Any thoughts ?
