Brentwood 3rd, MRH 4th in wrestling district meet

Brentwood and Maplewood Richmond Heights wrestlers, who qualified, faced off for state meet qualification at the district/sectional meet at Whitfield on Saturday. The top four finishers in each weight class will wrestle in Columbia.

Brentwood finished in third, with 103.5 team points and MRH took fourth with 99. Whitfield won the meet with 240, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Six Brentwood wrestlers qualified for the state meet, with Gary Silerio taking second and Donovan Obando, third. Read more about the Brentwood team in the Brentwood Spirit.

MRH had five qualify for State with Romelle Person and Matt Green winning; and Ronald Stewart, Kar’Mel Brewer and Treyvon Williams taking second.

MRH coach Cory Reichert said by email that the team has been battling injuries, and  only one entry was allowed per weight class, which hurt the Blue Devils in the team standings.

He said Brentwood performed well in the wrestlebacks, “and had more entries so they were bound to catch up to us. We were battling to hold on to second most of the tournament but we just didn’t have enough guys to hold on.”

MRH senior Romelle Person finished the tourney with 153 career wins — an MRH school record that has been growing with each meet. Four more wins and he’ll have his second state title in a row.

  • 132 Championship: Rhiley Smith, New Madrid County Central, dec. Treyvon Williams, MRH, 6-4
  • 138 Third place: Narvell Jordan, Brentwood, major dec. Ashton Wynn, Hancock, 14-5
  • 145 Championship: Matt Green, MRH, dec. Gary Silerio, Brentwood, 6-5
  • 152 Third place: Cole White, Herculaneum, pin Deshaun Johnson, Brentwood, 2:22
  • 220 Third place: Donovan Obando, Brentwood, pin Dillan Williams, Lutheran St. Charles, :20
