Dan Fitzgerald was appointed acting chief when Steve Disbennett stepped down.

The city of Brentwood announced in a press release Tuesday afternoon that Mayor Pat Kelly has appointed Major Dan Fitzgerald to the position of chief of police, replacing Steve Disbennett, who retired in February. Fitzgerald had been the interim chief.

Fitzgerald began with the Brentwood Police Department as an officer in 1983, according to the release. He was promoted to corporal in 1999, sergeant in 2003 and major/assistant chief in 2009. In 2012 he attended and graduated from the FBI National Academy.

Mayor Kelly attempted to appoint Fitzgerald in the April 7 board of aldermen meeting was defeated in a 5-3 vote of the aldermen. The appointment requires majority approval of the board of aldermen, according to city code. Kelly again recommended Fitzgerald’s appointment in the April 21 meeting. The board of aldermen tied 5-5 at that meeting, and the mayor broke the tie with his vote.
