Several hundred craft beer lovers came to Maplewood Saturday for a first-in-St. Louis event.

Once a year a brewery in Belgium makes a unique beer and selects locations around the world to receive one cask. The Side Project Cellar, in Maplewood ( 7373 Marietta Avenue) was selected for the honor this year. It’s called Zwanze Day.

Scott Pesek, from Webster Groves, said he’s traveled to Chicago, Kansas City or Louisville in the past for the event. “St. Louis finally got it after a long wait,” he said.

He said Maplewood made the most of it.

“They took something that could have been very congested and made it very cool, so more people may not have ever thought to step over there and try it, but they got a chance to do that,” he said.

Side Project Cellar co-owner Cory King agreed. “Obviously Maplewood, allowing and helping us to do this on the street, and the weather has been perfect,” he said. Marietta Avenue was closed in front of Side Project Cellar.

“It’s been an honor to get a keg, which not many places in the United States even got it, so for us to get this on our first year open is fantastic,” King said. “Kansas City has had it two or three times — first time in St. Louis, and ideally, hopefully, we can keep it in St. Louis.”
