Kakao Maplewood's lavender truffle won a Good Food Award in 2014.

Kakao Maplewood is a finalist for national recognition for its lavender truffle.

The truffle has a semi-sweet, soft center, then it’s dipped in milk chocolate and topped with a lavender bud. The morsel a finalist in the Good Food Awards in the confections division.
The awards “celebrate the kind of food we all want to eat: tasty, authentic and responsibly produced,” from the group’s website.

“We use local lavender from Winding Brook Farm, in Eureka,” employee Barb Baue said. “We steep that lavender in the cream before we make the truffles.”

Baue said they loved it. “That’s what they came back and told us,” she said. “They needed to verify that everything was all-natural. The animals in the dairy need to be humanely treated.”

Kakao will find out in February if it’s a winner.

Baue said it ties in well with an award they received from the Retail Confectioners International that recognizes collaborations with local businesses.
