Local resident with flu-like symptoms tested for coronavirus, waits for results

A local resident told 40 South News (by phone) Wednesday that several days ago they woke up at around 2 a.m. with body chills and a temperature of 101.4, though no sore throat.

(Using pronouns they, their, for anonymity)

They set up an appointment to be tested for flu at a nearby clinic, then couldn’t
get back to sleep because they were worried. They took test, in in their car, and tested negative for flu types A and B.

Because they were in a high risk category it was suggested they also take the test for the coronavirus. They drove directly to a clinic in Maryland Heights.

A technician dressed in full protective gear gave them the nasal swab test. They said the test was much more aggressive than the flu test — “like scratching at your brain.” They were given information about quarantining and told the results would be back in 3 to 5 days, though more likely 5 because of the backlog.

Back home they went straight to the master bedroom and have been there since. They said the fever broke since then, it hasn’t traveled to the lungs and they don’t have a sore throat.

Their family had talked about what they would do in case this happened, so they were able to quickly get away from the rest of the family.

“I want to share the story so people know that it’s not the end of the world,” they said. “Be safe. Take it seriously. Keep the social distance. If you’re told to quarantine, do it. Loss of income is at the back of my mind, but the biggest worry is waiting for the results of this test.”
