Maplewood (ZIP code 63143) has been ranked 14th nationally on a National Association of Realtors’ list of “hipster” places to live — beating out cities such as Eugene, Oregon, and Minneapolis.

Hipsters, according to the study, are “those who embrace the indie culture and tend to embrace lifestyles of artisanal coffee and avocado toast.” Maplewood has at least half a dozen shops to find ‘artisanal coffee.’

The director of economic research for realtor.com® said hipsters have a knack for getting it right.

“Based on our research, there’s clear evidence that ‘hipster’ popularity — in markets like Austin, Texas — has led to mainstream interest and higher home prices over time,” said Javier Vivas, director of economic research for realtor.com®. “Whether it’s the farm-to-table restaurants or urban renewal projects that were already underway, a concentration of hipsters seems to be an indicator of a hot housing market.”

According to the post, realtor.com® and Yelp culled their data to find the reviews in ZIP codes that most contained the word “hipster.” See the full post by National Association of Realtors.

Stone Spiral Coffee and Curios is one of many Maplewood shop that serve ‘artisanal coffee.’

  1. As a Maplewood Oldie, I can’t help but chuckle every time I think about our quaint, sweet little burg being labeled a Top Hipster locale. Of course, I only chuckle in private, and very quietly, lest I do something to seem even less “hip” than I actually am. Oh, how I love this town, so filled with history and memories…..and still striving to make more!

  2. I liked Maplewood before it was put on a top hipster towns in America list. Now that it is on said list, I no longer like it.

  3. When our barber shop turned into Roughneck ( a beard barber !) And we had people from all over lining up for blocks to buy specialty Donuts and craft Beer I knew we were Definitely headed towards Hipster Central of Missouri.
But I had no idea we could rank so high on a countrywide rating though.
I love our unique and wonderful little town and all the small shops and great people who continue to make it so Awesome.
    Long live Maplewood.
    Stay Strange

    • Right on! I saw this coming when we had a K-Mart on our main street — with rooftop parking! Sadly, that’s gone, but the Hipster vibe is going strong.

      • That place was classic. I remember as a kid in the 70s and 80s going there. The upper floor of the parking garage used to really shake when cars drove near where you were standing.

  4. How can we not be hip when one of our local haunts is offering a sandwich called “The Eggplant Volcano”?? Applewood smoked eggplant fried in Civil Life brew, grilled red pepper hummus, basil-walnut pesto, tomato jam……….C’mon!! Everything about that sandwich is hip, and I bet tasty….no, I don’t own the establishment btw……

  5. Is this meant to be a good thing? I remember the good old days when the gays were used as a realty indicator.
Personally I don’t look good in a fedora so I’ll stay put.

    • Stop profiling. I haven’t seen a fedora worn on Maplewood streets since… well, since the last festival we had and there were tons of tourists enjoying our town. So, come on over. Bareheaded!?

    • Come on now, Hipsters can be noticed by their near homeless attire. Fedoras are exclusively a neckbeard thing, m’wpoi
