Maplewood will pay the owners of the Shop ‘n Save shopping center about $40,000 a year to allow shoppers in the business district to use its lot, according to a report in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The city negotiated a 10-year agreement with Brixmor property group, City Manager Marty Corcoran said in an interview with the Post-Dispatch after the city council meeting on Tuesday. The deal covers the 134 parking spaces facing Manchester Road and the first row behind those spaces. It works out to 82 cents a day per parking space, Corcoran said.

According to Corcoran, when the shopping center was built in the late 1990s, the city tried to negotiate a parking agreement at the time but was refused. He said the center has been sold twice since then.

The 134 parking spaces facing Manchester Road and the first row behind those spaces in the Shop ‘n Save lot are being leased by the city.

  1. I would like to see the Maplewood Library moved to a place where there was plenty of parking. Especially have handicap spaces. To attended one of the programs that they have now (which are excellent) if you don’t get there at least an hour before the program, and you can’t walk far, you have to turn around and go home.

  2. I would like to see the same lease agreement on the North-West corner of the 7200 block & South-East corner of the 7300 block of Manchester. We need parking on the South-East corner
more than a Park that presently exists. The street parking has gotten terrible and people going to all the restaurants and other shopping need a longer place to park their cars. This would free up a lot of street parking and limit the street parking to 30 minutes instead of 2 hours.
If we want people to enjoy their shopping experience in Maplewood, we need to provide adequate parking!

    • I’m not sure, but I think that space you are speaking of might belong to Citizens National Bank. I think they use it for some employee parking too. Someone, just needs to check it out. Because I’m not sure.

  3. Shop N Save has been very neighborly for a long time about allowing people to use the lot. This is a good step forward by MW to take advantage of the assets available and not look to clear buildings just for more parking. 40K sounds like a decent chunk of money, but it only comes out to about a penny per square foot each day and doesn’t require you to upkeep it. Still, I wouldn’t mind if the lot owners wised up and put a few new buildings in the space to mirror the other side of the street (like it was years ago). Certainly they could get a better return financially.
