Nikylan Knapper, Maplewood’s first African American mayor, was sworn in Tuesday evening outside Maplewood City Hall, joined by her family, and approximately 75 masked supporters watching from the parking lot below.

She was sworn in by Genesis Draper, a friend from her previous work in Nashville and currently a judge from Houston, Texas. Knapper is an Administrative Judge for USDA.

After being sworn in she told her supporters, “Our council is made up of people that care for their neighbors,” and, “We will be a beacon for St. Louis County. We will be a blueprint for St. Louis County. It’s time to get to work, y’all!”
