The Affton Schools Board of Education Tuesday night approved the hiring of current Maplewood Richmond Heights Assistant Principal Dr. Deann Myers as high school principal for the 2019-2020 school year.

From MRH School District:

Dr. Deann Myers has been a smiling presence and trusted leader at the Maplewood Richmond Heights High School for nearly a decade. Now, she’s taking her radiance and deep educational experience to the principal’s office of the Affton School District.

Following an extensive search, the Affton Schools Board of Education last night approved the hiring of Dr. Myers as High School Principal for the 2019-2020 school year.

Most recently, Dr. Myers held the title of assistant principal at MRH High School. Since her hiring in 2010, she has also served as an instructional coach and taught science at the high school level for eight years. Dr. Myers earned a bachelor of arts in biology education from McKendree University in Lebanon, Il., a master of science in biology education at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, as well as a doctorate in educational leadership from Maryville University in St. Louis.

In addition to her deft leadership with programs such as “A+ Schools,” she has been a driving force behind homecoming, graduation, Black History Month, and countless other projects.

Dr. Myers is a native of Worden, Illinois, who now lives in the Carondelet area. She has two grown daughters who still live in the metro east.

“Deann’s departure is bittersweet for all of us,” said MRH Superintendent of Schools Karen Hall. “We are so deeply grateful to her for the invaluable role she’s played in inspiring our students to become leaders, scholars, stewards and citizens. We wish her nothing but the best as her career advances.”

“As a superintendent, I was humbled by the talented individuals that we had the good fortune to consider during our search for the next principal of Affton High School,” said Dr. Travis Bracht, superintendent of Affton Schools. “Dr. Myers was identified by all of our stakeholder groups as the top candidate for the position. I am excited to welcome her considerable skills and talents to the Affton family.”

“For nine years Dr. Myers has been our friend, leader and caring partner in all the twists and turns of the schooling process,” said MRH High School Principal Dr. Kevin Grawer. “Personally, I have had a blast working with her and I am forever grateful to her for her support and expertise. I know she will do great things there and I plan to enjoy my last few months working with her here and to continue our friendship.”

Dr. Myers will finish out the rest of the current school year at MRH. She will begin serving as principal at Affton High on July 1. She replaces Dr. Vince Powell, who announced his retirement from Affton earlier this year. MRH will launch a search for her replacement soon.
