Maplewood Richmond Heights girls soccer leads their conference, tied with Crossroads and Valley Park at nine wins, but Wednesday’s game with Hillboro was a different story.

The Blue Devils previously lost to the Hawks 0-4, and Wednesday, missing strikers Gracie Biedenstein, who left the game at the half for a leadership group meeting, and Lauren Wismann, who got sick after five minutes, fell to the Hawks 0-7.

The Devils managed only two shots on goal in the first half, but held the score to 0-1. With Biedenstein gone there was a “mental breakdown” after the second Hawks goal, coach Amber Godfrey said.

She said it’s a young team — only one senior, and a lot of juniors. “They’re playing well, we just had not so good of a game,” she said.

MRH plays Pacific (4-8) Thursday and Brentwood (2-10), both at home.

MRH plays Brentwood in baseball Friday at Deer Creek Park at 4:15.
