Richmond Heights residents, worried about an apparent spike in crime, packed a room at The Heights Tuesday night in a meeting with Richmond Heights Police, Fox 2 News reports.

A 63-year-old woman’s purse and car were stolen at Schnucks earlier this month, several cars were stolen off driveways in November, and in October a house on Edward Terrace was burglarized.

Also, on Oct. 13, Maplewood police reported burglaries in the 7700 block of Williams Avenue, the 7500 block of Jerome Avenue and at two apartments in the 7400 block of Lyndover Place.

While one part of Richmond Heights has been hit hard, Detective Sgt. Gerry Rohr said residents should still feel relatively safe, because there isn’t a big change in crime historically; it’s actually dropped.  Crime in the last 12 months in Richmond Heights is down 15 percent, and last quarter it dropped 23 percent.

Police stressed the importance of being aware, and calling police if something doesn’t seem right.

“When you see something out of the ordinary the instinct should be to call the police,” Rohr said. “It’s our job to be bothered.”

  1. Not to belabor point, but there was more than the Edwards Terrace burglary on Oct. 23. My home was burglarized on the morning of Oct. 13 and was one of four that day – the other three were in Maplewood. The RH police told me the morning of Oct. 13 that there had been a number of other burglaries in the RH neighborhood before mine. I find it interesting that the only one reported in news was the Edwards Terrace that involved a high speed chase after the perpetrators crashed into police car. I would want to know which kinds of crimes were down this year.
