Brentwood High School senior (coming year) Sophia Rivera won both shot put and discus at the state meet for the third year in a row this spring, and already has had a busy (amazing) summer, her mother, Michelle Hassemer reports.  So far she’s:

  • Competed in Havana, Cuba and won gold (shot put), silver (javelin) and bronze (discus)
  • Won the High School National Championship in shot put and javelin
  • Placed sixth at High School Nationals in discus
  • Placed second to a 2x NCAA shot put champion at the under-20 National Championships to make team USA for Pan Am Juniors in Canada
  • Is US#1 in high school shot put, and US#2 in high school javelin
  • Won the 3k shot put and 500g javelin and set national records at the World Youth Trials and made the under-18 team to represent the USA at the World Youth Championships in Cali, Columbia.

“Yes, she made TWO National Teams this summer! Way to go!!” Hassemer said. “She leaves tomorrow (Saturday) for a training camp for the World Youth team…  What an honor!”
