A support dog belonging to a Maplewood man went missing on Thursday, Oct. 5, according to, a neighbor, Jann Henningsen, who is helping the owner find it.

She (the dog, Maddie) is a support dog (not officially certified) for a man who is diabetic and prone to seizures, and accompanies him to his medical appointments to BJC.

The dog, a small poodle, disappeared near Greenwood Boulevard and Commonwealth Avenue in Maplewood at around 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 5.

“She is well known to staff at BJC. The two are inseparable. This dog was wearing a collar with her name, address and phone number. In addition, she has a microchip thus it would not be hard to find the owner. The dog is elderly, deaf and has poor eyesight. As you can imagine her companions are emotionally distraught over her disappearance,” Henningsen said.

A $200 reward is offered for the dog’s return in a Craigslist ad.

  1. Sorry, I mistated Maddie’s condition – she’s not blind (yet) but is deaf, making it difficult to get her attention if whoever likely took her suddenly let her go. Wonder who took the signs down?.. don’t need three guesses.

  2. Why don’t some of the local rescue groups chip-in another $200-300 to raise the reward? After missing a week it seems someone likely picked Maddie up for themselves, but you never know they wouldn’t drop her off nearby if the reward is increased. Sadly, I doubt it – whoever likely snatched her is too selfish to be lured by the cash. With Maddie’s blindness & hearing impairment, you’d think they would reconsider their action. Assuming I’m right about Maddie’s disappearance, such a person is unlikely to return her to her loved ones just for the money. Too selfish… C’mon “somebody”, do the right thing! You can let her go in as little time as it took to grab her.

    • It would be wonderful if the reward amount could be raised. It was suggested that she establish a Go Fund Me account for this purpose, because, due to her circumstances, she does not have the resources to increase the reward amount on her own. As for why someone would take Maddie, I don’t think we will ever know why. That person needs to know that that act has created utter devastation in the life of the person that loves and depends on her. Maddie was devoted to him and I am sure that she very much misses him and can’t understand why she has been taken away.

      • Taking someones dog is just about as bad as kidnapping a child. Who ever did this is despicable who has no empathy for other people or animals. I’m sure the dog misses her owner as well…

    • Yes, Karen posted signs early on in the search for Maddie, but she discovered that someone took them down. This was very disappointing. Posting signs is really an effective way to get the word out about a missing animal/family member.

  3. I would like to clarify that Maddie is actually a Caton de Tulear, but to the untrained eye (like mine) she could be mistaken for a poodle. It is critical that Maddie be found and returned to her owner, who is ill, diabetic and has seizures. Maddie detects when his owner is about to have a seizure and she alerts him to this fact. The loss of Maddie has been devastating. We are hopeful that she soon can be back home. Thank you to everyone that has shown concern, given advice and assisted in the search to find Maddie. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

    • We received good news today. Channel 4 will air a story on Maddie tonight (10/13/17) at 10:00 p.m. It is my understanding that the story can also be viewed on their online site tomorrow. We can’t thank Channel 4 enough to for their coverage of this situation.
