More information on Ward 3 Candidate Steve Terelmes:

I have been observing the Ward 3 candidacy activity and am very happy to see that for the first time since I remember Maplewood has 3 candidates on the ballot. Clearly the continued success of Maplewood has struck a strong cord within Ward 3.

I will be participating at the Hadley Township Democratic Club Forum at my favorite brewery, Schlafly Bottleworks, on July 24 at 7:30 p.m. (Previously this paper had stated my attendance was uncertain). I look forward to a great discussion and hope to see many of you there.

I will be at one of my favorite Maplewood restaurants, the Muddled Pig Gastropub on both July 25 and August 4 starting at 7 p.m. for the sole purpose of meeting people and talking about our great city. Stop by, say hi, and try one of their amazing burgers!

As we draw closer to this election, I would like to say that similar to the other candidates I have spoken with people across Ward 3 lately (as I have done for the last 15 years). In summary, here is what I am hearing.

  • Maplewood is Growing Better. We have come a long way. And it’s so important we keep a positive vision for our future. We have some challenges to address, like growing taxes, recent random crime events, traffic, housing growth, policy questions, etc. These all reflect the normal pains of a city that is growing and prospering.
  • Maplewood is Better Together. We are a diverse community. Race, age, politics — we love to rub shoulders with those who are different from us… and learn from them.
  • Maplewood’s future is strong. There are so many things we have done well and there are many things we will continue to do better. We shine bright across all of St. Louis and deep into Missouri and Illinois. People are watching us, visiting us, enjoying us, and excited to see what we will do next.

  1. I am certainly in favor of the concept of the candidate forum. The value of the forum is the discussion, the ability to meet the candidates and to get answers to specific questions. I don’t understand the value of a vote resulting in an endorsement by the club. I have spoken with all three candidates and they are all qualified to serve on Council. I believe that it is up to citizens to attend and participate at the forum and not let another entity make up their mind for them. I would like to hear an opposing viewpoint on this topic.

    • Hello Barry, As a member of a group who has made an endorsement (Mobilize Missouri), I think the value of endorsements in general is to provide an additional data point for voters to use (if they choose to) in making their decisions. For example, my mother is a nurse, and National Nurses United often endorses in electoral races. While my mother does not vote strictly in line with who they endorse, she does take their endorsement into her own research and decision making. Hadley’s endorsement vote seems an analogous situation to me for those who trust that group.

I hope this provides some context as to why a group would choose to endorse.
