Maplewood is getting a new independently-owned restaurant. The owners of The Blue Duck, in Washington, MO, plan to open their second location at 7401 Manchester Road — the former Monarch Restaurant building at Manchester and Sutton, restaurant owner Chris Rayburn told 40 South News on Friday.

Rayburn said he and his wife, Karmen bought The Blue Duck, in Washington, about six years ago, expanded and grew, and moved down to the (Washington) riverfront about three years ago.

He said they’ve been looking for an opportunity to move up to, what they refer to as ‘the city.’ The move to Maplewood began when they were introduced to David Schlafly and found out about his plans for the Monarch building. The Blue Duck will have a space in the back of the building by the parking lot, Rayburn said. The entrance will be a new one, off Sutton.

They’re taking their same ‘new American’ concept to Maplewood. “We do your classic comfort food — our take on it. We do all scratch cooking,” he said. “We do all our own breads, all our own desserts. Everything in house. Casual environment – we’re not looking to be upscale. Just try to do good food — good value.” Karmen, is the pastry chef.

Rayburn said they’re able to use some of the existing infrastructure in the former Monarch kitchen, which will speed things up. “We should start seeing some of the build-out by next week,” he said.

Maplewood plan and zoning is due to consider a conditional use permit for the restaurant at its meeting on Tuesday.
