Woman charged with robbery, assault in Promenade theft

A 25-year-old woman is facing robbery and assault charges for allegedly robbing an elderly woman of her purse and nearly running over her and her sister on the Brentwood Promenade parking lot, KMOV reports.

deenna-smithThe St Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s office issued warrants for Robbery 1st and Assault 2nd on Deena Smith, of the 7500 block of Melrose Avenue, St. Louis, for the charges, Brentwood Chief of Police Dan Fitzgerald posted on the department website.

Authorities allege on May 27, Smith was standing outside her car near World Market in the Brentwood Promenade when two sisters, aged 78 and 82, walked by. Smith allegedly stole the purse belonging to the 82-year-old, who was on a walker.

Smith got back into her car, and the 82-year-old woman tried to get the purse back.

“She (the 82-year-old) went up to the car because she noticed that the passenger side window was half open and she’d knew it’s be locked, so she was going to open the door and get her purse,” the 78-year-old woman said, according to KMOV.

She bumped both sisters with her car, the 78-year-old woman said. One broke an ankle, the other suffered bruises.

Brentwood Police later arrested Smith. The victim got her purse and some property back.

Fitzgerald said on the department website, “Thanks to the help of witnesses and some hard work by Brentwood detectives, an arrest was made.”
