The loss of this william Koester built home at Sutton and Flora can only be called a damn shame.

Here is a look at a few more of Maplewood’s historic buildings that were so recently lost but hopefully will be long remembered.

One of two lamella roofs in Maplewood saving this one would have been nearly impossible. The widening of Big Bend left only the width of the sidewalk between the supposrting wall and the traffic lane. the other example can be found on Sunnen's campus at Hanley and Manchester.

Lost to a severe storm in May 2011, this obviously sturdy garage was a feature on our historic walking tour of Maplewood. Note the chimney which was needed to warm the family's balky-in-cold-weather auto seen below, a Winton Flyer.

This loss was a real heartbreaker. This was the last two-story barn or carriage house with hay loft, whichever you prefer, in Maplewood. It had deteriorated to the point that a restoration wasn't economically possible. Too bad. It looked like a painting.

  1. I did not know about the loss of the garage and barn. I look forward to learning more about the historical structures that still exist.

  2. Gary, Google, Adblock Plus. I know it works on a Mac running Firefox. Not sure about other browsers/platforms, but if it does, the problem will disappear.

  3. Doug, thanks for all of the research into this history and making it so easily available to us. Only problem is all the advertising covering up the right side of your pictures and reports.
