In the Maplewood City Council, Ward 3 council member Jenny Schmidt is not running for reelection. Two residents filed for the seat and will be on the ballot on April 5, 2022. They are Mary Killian and Nick Homa (see his info here). Both have sent information to 40 South. This is information that Mary Killian sent. In Ward 2 Eric Page is running unopposed.

Mary Killian:

I have lived in Maplewood for over 15 years. As a child, I often shopped in Maplewood with my mother. Over time I watched the decline of the Maplewood area and I have been privileged to watch it rise to new and very interesting heights.

I moved to Maplewood because of its wonderful diversity. (I found out, after I purchased my home here, that it was the home of my brother’s (18 years older than me) best friend from high school.

I have been widowed twice and have two sons and five grandchildren. I lived with my first husband in Shrewsbury, where I was appointed by the then mayor to the Park Board. Several years after his death I remarried and moved to the Seattle area. I lived there and in the San Francisco area for 14 years. I returned here after his death.

I have been a teacher, retail manager, licensed soccer coach and referee, and a retail business owner. I worked for the Upward Bound program and have just started to work with Holy Redeemer Saint Vincent De Paul.

I am running for city council because as it is wonderful to see Maplewood moving forward into an inclusive future. I feel that we are losing some of what makes Maplewood so special. Communication with all members of our community is declining. Some of this is due to the restrictions caused by ongoing Covid restrictions and limitations put on many of our citizens due to economics as well as inability to work with modern devices.

I feel we must find ways to keep moving forward while keeping in mind the lessons of the past. I feel the best way of doing this is to find ways of including residents of all ages. We seem to be doing very well at including our children (our children and their education are our future), but we must include our long time residents and our seniors who have witnessed and lived through the faults and glories of our past, and can bring their wisdom to balance and strengthen our future and keep us from repeating errors of our past.
