Brothers Mike and Dinod Patel, along with nephew Raj Patel, are gutting the space, according to the St. Louis Business Journal. Dickie’s Barbeque Pit, which shared the building with Applegate’s, will remain.

The owners are projecting $30,000 in weekly sales from Einstein Bros. and Dickie’s combined, or about $1.56 million in annual sales. They are spending $400,000 on the buildout, and plan to open by late April, according the Business Journal.

  1. Maybe it’s time for something new there. When Applegate’s first opened, around 20 years ago, the original owner had a great concept, but after many years and ownership handoffs, it was not the same. That’s not the Patels’ fault…it stopped being the neighborhood deli with the 1940’s décor and flair long before their era. At different points it included a small convenience store and then a bakery alongside the deli; nothing seemed to stick for long. I’m sure that the Panera moving in right across the street took a toll also. Applegate’s soups and sandwiches were good, but I’ll be glad to see Einstein’s there. Every Panera I’ve ever been to tends to be crowded and loud, and they’re everywhere — there’s another Panera at Galleria, less than a mile away from the one across from Applegate’s — this will provide some variety at Brentwood & 40. Looking forward to it.
