Why all the Mattress Firm stores?

A Brentwood Forest resident wondered recently on Facebook why there are so many Mattress Firm stores on S. Brentwood Boulevard. It’s true. A salesman at one of the many locations said there are five Mattress Firm stores within 1.8 miles.

The reason, he said, is Mattress Firm bought out the competition and the leases for all the competing stores and converted them. The salesman said the leases for the various stores are different, so some locations may last longer than others.

Mattress Firm is owned by Steinhoff International Holdings, which bought Mattress Firm in August 2016 (Reuters). Mattress Firm had previously acquired all Mattress Giant stores in 2012. Some of those stores were converted to Sleepy’s, which were later converted to Mattress Firm. (Wikipedia).

Mattress Direct, a St. Louis brand, and Sleep Number is also on S. Brentwood opposite the Galleria. How long does a mattress last? The Better Sleep Council advises no more than seven years.

  1. We have a Sleep Number mattress. Why would you throw it out after seven years when it has a 20-year warranty and for what it costs?

  2. I go to Mattresses Wholesale on Sutton. They make custom mattresses and box springs and are really nice. They even delivered my box spring for free.
