The debate team attended the Jefferson City Capital Classic this weekend. Thirty-five schools from around the state of Missouri attended the tournament, and it was the largest and most competitive tournament we have been to all year.
We always have a great time in Jefferson City and this year was no different. However, while we left early last year because we did not have anyone advance to finals, we were able to close down the tournament this year because we still had a team in. It was a great weekend!
The following students advanced to the semifinal round of events:
- Duo Interpretation: Brigid Buckley and Sophie Breitmeyer
- Prose/Poetry: Lindsey Trieu and Madhumathi Vijayalingam
- Storytelling: Ben Haug
Some of the events at this tournament had close to 100 competitors in them, so to advance into the top 12 is pretty amazing. All of our competitors that advanced into semifinals were novices, so they are in their first year of experience and are advancing at varsity tournaments. As a matter of fact, Lindsey, a sophomore and novice competitor, was the top seed going into the semifinal round of prose/poetry, which was a highly competitive event. Way to go Brigid, Sophie, Lindsey, Madhu, and Ben!
The following students earned awards at the Jefferson City Capital Classic:
- Public Forum Debate: Madhumathi Vijayalingam and Meghan Haug
There were over 60 teams in the Varsity Public Forum category, and our team of two sophomores kept debating right up to the final round. It was an exciting night as we waited for the results to come in for each round to see if they would move on. They were undefeated in the preliminary rounds and then continued to win the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds to keep the team there until the very end of the night. Way to go Madhu and Meghan!
The following students earned new degrees in the NSDA after their participation this weekend:
- Angeles Calzada: Degree of Special Distinction
- Ben Haug: Degree of Excellence
I have attached pictures of the team doing our traditional Jefferson City Tournament activities. We had a lot of wall jumping and Ozarkland fun, and we want to make sure to share it with you! Thanks for allowing your children to spend an entire weekend doing an activity we all love, and I hope they are getting some sleep today!
