Charles Ault, who lived in Brentwood 62 years before MSD took possession of his house, at the Brentwood Board of Aldermen meeting Monday donated a 1896 map of Maddenville to the city.
He said he had this map of his neighborhood made some years ago. “It shows all of the detail of what was the beginning, and then what became a small portion of the greater city of Brentwood.” He always intended to hang it in his home, but could never figure out where to hang it, he said.
“I first walked into that house when I was seven years old, because that was where my best friend lived, and after getting the entire tour of the four rooms, I went to his mother, and in my most diplomatic manner said, ‘Mrs, Meyer, …I don’t want to be pushy, but when you don’t want to live here anymore, let me know, because I want to live here,’ and 40 years later I got the house. So now they’ve (MSD) got the house, and I wanted to give this map of Maddenville to my city,” Ault said.
Mayor Chris Thornton said the map will go next to another historic map in the room.
Also in the meeting, officials also approved an update of the city’s comprehensive plan to be done by Houseal Lavigne Associates, and the purchase of 8758 Rosalie Avenue for $113,000 to be used for city purposes. The city will not need to take a mortgage to buy the house. “This is why we have reserves,” Alderwoman Maureen Saunders said.
Great question, Dorothy – watch for it in the BOA chambers.
I would love to view this map. Where will it be hung?
