Older dogs make wonderful companions, but they are often overlooked in favor of puppies. This month the APA is celebrating our older residents and spreading the word on why adopting a senior pet is a fantastic choice. Here are 5 reasons why you should consider adopting a pup with a little gray in the muzzle.

    1. No Surprises!

What you see is what you get with older pets. Their size, personality, and grooming needs are already known, so you know when you meet them if they are a good fit for your family.

    2. Old Dog, New Tricks

Contrary to popular belief, older dogs are perfectly capable of learning new commands. Even better, they often already know them, making “sit,” “stay,” and “speak” training a breeze.

    3. Marathoners Not Required

Older dogs are not the 24/7 go-getters that puppies are. In fact, they prefer not to be in constant motion. While senior pets definitely still need daily exercise, a leisurely walk or easy-going game of fetch will suffice.

    4. No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problems

Teething puppies love to chew. Shoes, floors, furniture: you name it, they chew it. Older dogs are well past that phase, and your furnishings will be grateful for it.

    5. Superhero Status

Senior dogs are frequently the last to be adopted at a shelter. By taking home an older dog, you could be saving a life. Your time with your new friend will be all the more special, and you’ll experience the rewards in the unparalleled loyalty and love an older dog offers.

Consider adopting an older pet like Zoe or Jake from the APA this month. We promise you’ll be happy you did!

9-year-old Zoe and 8-year-old Jake are both Miniature Pinscher mixes looking for new homes. Zoe is a very loving girl who is housetrained and gets along well with both other dogs and cats. Jake is a peppy fellow who is partially housetrained, enjoys the company of both adults and children, loves car rides and walks well on his leash.

Stop by the APA at 1705 S. Hanley Road to meet Jake and Zoe or call our adoption counselors at 645-4610 to learn more about these sweet pups! minpin
