Diverted commuters stream through Maplewood

Detoured traffic on Marshall Avenue on Feb. 11.

An MSD closure on McCausland Avenue between Southwest Avenue and Arsenal Road is diverting commuter traffic onto Marshall Avenue, especially in the morning and evening commutes.

Cars were backed up from Manchester south to Canterbury on Marshall Wednesday morning. Some turned onto side streets like Arbor and Marietta avenues to avoid the line. A Marietta Avenue resident who takes Sutton Boulevard said Sutton was backed up too.

MSD closed McCausland Monday for major sewer work. It’s expected to last until the week of Feb. 23.

A Maple Avenue resident said afternoon southbound traffic on Marshall is “awful and fast,” and in the morning the backed up cars make it hard to turn onto Marshall.

Maplewood Police Department Sgt. Matt Nighbor said the department is aware of the increased traffic and has been monitoring the area. Several citations for speeding were issued to motorists Tuesday.

This video of traffic on Canterbury and Marshall avenues was made around 8 a.m. Wednesday.

  1. Thanks, Doug. Good to know that the police will be giving this detour some extra attention. It has become difficult to turn onto Marshall from Maple, especially during rush hours, and we’ve had quite a few disgruntled drivers try to head the wrong way on Maple before realizing that it was one way. Let’s hope MSD finishes their project quickly…
