Maplewood Richmond Heights senior Satchel McDonald hit both of his free throws with 3.4 seconds remaining in overtime to give Maplewood a 48-46 win over Whitfield in the district title game Friday at Principia.

“That’s what seniors do,” coach Corey Frazier said after the game. “Seniors want the ball – you just get out of the way. They wanted this game and they went and got it. They could have easily folded.”

The first half the Blue Devils got into foul trouble, and some bench players kept it close, coach Corey Frazier said.

“These guys are battle-tested,” Frazier said. “We started out 0-3, and for us to be right here right now—you can’t ask for anything more. I’m happy for these kids. This is the first time they’ve ever experienced something like this.”

Whitfield beat MRH in last year’s district final. McDonald told the Post-Dispatch the win felt great.

“It was a little pay back and revenge. It just felt great to win districts. It was unexpected. Now we have a chance to go on and prove ourselves.”
