Fire Becomes Ice Daily at Prieto Glass and Nori Obata, Beads and Porcelain

A talented couple of artisans reconfigure glass and clay into many eye-catching objects.

One of the many benefits of living in a walkable community like Maplewood is that you’re more likely to meet people and make interesting discoveries while walking.  Several times a week my dog and I poke our heads in the usually open door of the Obata/Prieto studio at 3264 S. Big Bend Blvd.  Me just to see what’s up and dog because he knows the whereabouts of the dog treat-stuffed canister.

These very friendly folks are usually engaged in the difficult and energetic pursuits of melting, pummeling, blowing, spinning, shaping, twirling (they both twirl), cutting and baking of clay and glass into the many forms they have become known for over more years in the business than they’re likely to admit.

The holidays are one of their busiest times of the year due to the popularity of their handmade items as gifts.  Remember handmade.  Because all of the plates, platters, bowls, cups, tumblers, mugs, vases, beads, necklaces, bracelets and etc. are guaranteed not to be computer generated.  Want proof?  Just stick your head in anytime the door is open or they are having open house on the following days.  December 11, 12, 18 & 19.  Their hours are 10:00am-5:00pm.  314-647-1776

In the interest of full disclosure, I wrote the above several years ago but the only change is the dog.
