Construction begins in Kellogg Park

Construction has begun in Kellogg Park — the location of the Maplewood Dog Park — in Maplewood on a new pavilion and restroom, thanks to a grant from the county.

The city received a grant of  $347,820 from the Municipal Park Commission of St. Louis County for the new facilities in Kellogg Park. The pavilion will be available to rent for a fee. When not in use it will be open to the public.

The park is at 2500 Westpoint Drive.

  1. The playground could use some freshening. The climbing ropes are heavily frayed and the underlying metal cable is exposed.

    • I’m on the park board and can let them know next time we meet. You can also email Anthony Traxler with the city whenever you notice an issue with a park.

  2. It appears to be added on the NE edge of the park but I’m not sure. If so, I like the placement of it and even better that it is paid for by a grant.

From the citizen’s academy class I recall that the MW parks and recreation is part of a cooperative along with BW and RH in order to keep budget costs lower and to allow residents in each city to use the others’ facilities at a resident cost. But I don’t remember what this means in terms of planning and funding?

Does MW have its own separate committee made of MW residents that create plans and goals for MW parks? Or are MW park decisions made by the collective members of the co-op?

Does MW also have a separate portion of the budget or does the co-op have a combined budget, meaning that MW tax money would go towards paying for things in RH and BW (like that really expensive ice rink renovation).

    • I don’t believe there is a coop board joe, but I know there is a maplewood board. They meet on the third Thursday every month. The city, for whatever reason, does not list the board meetings on the city calendar or publish agendas and minutes.

        • The park board and sustainability board agendas and meeting minutes are not online. And since neither group meets on a regular monthly schedule(although the site would indicate otherwise), there’s really no way for people to know whether a meeting is being held a particular month or not. I have asked that they be put online and on the emailing list, like the council meetings and planning and zoning meetings are.

        • So you go to that link Harold and it just says they meet on the third Thursday. Where are the agendas and minutes?

    • Maplewood has its own Parks and Recreation Board. It meets the third Thursday of every month in the Council Chambers. It is an advisory board and gives suggestions and input to the City Council who makes the final decisions. There are plans and goals and Master Plans for each park. Public input is encouraged.
