Fire trucks respond to vacant apartments for days: here’s why

A resident asked why, for three straight days (May 3-5), Brentwood, Richmond Heights, Maplewood and Clayton fire and rescue units have responded to the apartment complex at Bellevue and Hoover avenues, where SSM is tearing down older apartments for construction of the hospital’s new senior citizen complex — The Bellevue at St. Mary’s Senior Living.

The fire and rescue personnel have been using the buildings, soon to be demolished, for training; practicing knocking down doors, tearing holes in roofs and walls.

  1. There is no better way to learn without injury during OJT, (On The Job Training). That is a good time to correct any mistakes. Better on OJT than the real thing of fighting a fire.

  2. This works out great for everyone, they get hands on training and in the end they’re torn down. Personally I love the idea, many firefighters ( myself when I was one years ago) learned more things hands on than in a book or video
