At the Class 2 state track and field championship meet on Saturday in Jefferson City, Brentwood senior sprinter Kaylon Jenkins helped the Eagles 4×100 meter relay to a first-place finish, and took first in the 400 and second in the 200 meter dashes.
Jenkins won the 400 with a 49.05, holding off the runner-up who came in at 49.38, and doing it 10 minutes after running the third leg on the Eagles championship 400 relay. He took second in the 200 by half the width of a fingernail, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported — Jenkins had a 22.511, the third place finisher came in at 22.5119.
Maplewood Richmond Heights sophomore Zach Barton, in his first season running track, took second in the 100m dash. MRH junior Jayda Buchannan took fifth in the girls 400m race. The boys 4×800 relay team took fifth.
Barton joined the Blue Devils track team half-way through the spring season. He played baseball the first half, according to the Post-Dispatch. After a friend suggested running track he said he’d give it try.
