Brentwood Public Works employee, Corey McCarthy became trapped up to his waist in mud, underground, while doing sewer lateral work in the 8900 block of Bridgeport Avenue Monday around 1:30 p.m.

Rescue crews from Brentwood, Clayton, Kirkwood and St. Louis responded and had McCarthy above ground and apparently unharmed by around 3:15 p.m.

Assistant Chief of Police Jim McIntyre said McCarthy was never in a life-threatening situation while trapped in the hole. McCarthy was sitting up on the gurney as he was taken to an ambulance after the rescue.

McIntyre has been assistant chief since the end of April, after Major Dan Fitzgerald was appointed chief on April 22.

Assistant Fire Chief Chief Terry Kurten said the underground shoring didn’t give way. McCarthy had gone down a ladder and become stuck in the mud, and continued to sink farther down as he struggled to get out. Kurten said an investigation will be made.

Brentwood Mayor Pat Kelly said at the board of aldermen meeting Monday that McCarthy has been released from the hospital.

  1. Oh my, Corey—I’m really glad you were not badly injured. There was a sink hole in York Village around Middlesex and Sussex—-It’s making me wonder if there isn’t a sonogram instrument that could assist in identifying cavernous areas. People really need to know what they are getting into. Stories of whole cars sinking through the caved-in drive way in the greater area are becoming more common. My personal “take-away” from all this is God is talking to us and hopes we listen.

Glad you are all right Corey. You guys as a team do a GREAT job in Brentwood.
