Maplewood Richmond Heights baseball (9-7) met Brentwood (7-4) for the first time time this season, and the first time since last year’s district championship, which MRH won 4-1, no-hitting Brentwood.
At the game on Tuesday at Deer Creek Park the Eagles got their revenge, scoring nine runs on eight hits, beating the Blue Devils 9-5 in eight innings.
It was tied 3-3 after the regulation seven innings, pitched by starters Skylar Sappington for Brentwood (through 5) and Drew Curtis (through 7) for MRH. In relief for MRH, Matt Green and Isaac Pearson combined, were charged with six runs in the top of the eighth.

“That put us in a tough spot, obviously,” MRH coach Jonathan Webb said. “Matt Green’s going to get a lot of key outs for us going forward. Had a little hiccup there. The margin for error is just so thin.
“Drew (Curtis) had done everything we needed him to do for seven innings. Gave us a really good chance to win a ball game against a pretty good team,” Webb said.
Brentwood coach Mike Immergoot said he aged about 10 years. “It’s a good thing I have a good coaching staff and a kid who pitches who’s nails,” he said. “No fear whatsoever when he goes out on that mound. Nothing but strikes.”
Sappington pitched five innings, gave up three hits, one walk, no earned runs and struck out eight.
Curtis threw 103 pitches and said after the game his arm still felt fine when he came out, “which is a good thing, I guess,” he said.
Brentwood plays Cleveland at Brentwood Park on Thursday. MRH plays Hazlewood East Friday at Deer Creek.
