Brentwood home owners are now seeing the effect, in their wallets, of passing Prop K in April. It passed with 56 percent approval.
Brentwood Ward 4 Alderman Tom Kramer reminded 40 South News that Wednesday is the day St. Louis County released and posted its new real estate tax bills for 2013.
“Particularly hard hit are the Brentwood home owners with houses,” he said in an email. “Because the school district increased their assessment by 69 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, (total of $4.6453/$100), many if not all single family house owners are waking up to anywhere from a few hundred to well over $1,000 per year, or more in extra taxes year over year.”
Superintendent of Schools David Faulkner said because the assessed valuation went down, the allowable rate went up, so it could have had an 81 cent increase, but the board voted go to 69 cents, so it’s below what it could have been.
He said the district will receive the money after the bills are paid in November, December and January, but some capital improvements have been made, knowing the money is coming.
- New ADA-compliant front door at the high school, to accommodate wheelchairs
- New refrigerator/freezer in the kitchen—the old ones were original to the building
- Money will be set aside for upgrading digital technology, which hasn’t been done yet because bids are now being accepted to upgrade the wireless system
- Bids will be accepted for a fire suppression system for the high school after architects are finished with the plans
“We’re doing it one piece at a time, and following the list that we gave folks for Prop K,” Faulkner said.
