Brentwood Michaels employees to be retrained on breastfeeding policy

The Brentwood Michaels store found itself in a backlash of mothers who breastfeed their children when a mother asked store employees for a place in the store to breastfeed her daughter, and the employees didn’t follow company policy, at first telling her to go outside.

The mother, Jessa Marie complained on Facebook, and Michaels apologized on its Facebook page. Later, the mother responded.

Hello, I am the mother who was asked to nurse outside at the Michael’s Store. Thank you very much for your apology, I greatly appreciate it. I think it is important to note that it was not one associate but two associates and a manager who had an issue with me breastfeeding in the store. It was a customer who came to my aid so that I was able to nurse in the craft room. That being said, I am so happy to learn that Michael’s has a wonderful policy in place for nursing mothers, and applaud you for making sure that this is known throughout the company so that nothing like this ever happens again. Thank you!!

Later she added that the Brentwood Michaels will retrain its employees on their breastfeeding policy.

Michaels Update!! I’ve spoken with the Zone VP. They have taken action to retrain the Brentwood location employees on their policy. All stores will soon be trained on their breastfeeding policy. I have asked that they put the International Breastfeeding Symbol on the sticker signage in every store window in the US and Canada. That request will be reviewed and will hopefully be added into the 2015 signage. I will not be returning to Michaels Crafts until the stickers are up!!! I will post as I hear of any new developments or changes within the company. The VP I spoke with, who seemed very sincere, is working diligently to make sure changes are made, and will be in touch with me as things happen…

  1. At the risk of feeding the trolls, yes, Ms. Au Naturale and Mr. Completely, if your right to pee and trim your toenails in public places were protected by state law, then Michaels would certainly have to accommodate you.

  2. I have to pee every now and then and the restroom is way up on the 2nd floor. If I can’t make it in time, is it ok to squat and pee? Isn’t that just as natural?

  3. I like to trim my toenails, have a sandwich then nap while I shop hope Michaels can accomodate me as well while I multi task.
