Brentwood preschool students get out into the community, in spite of their location in the Hanley Industrial Park. Cathy Edmond, Brentwood Early Childhood Center teacher shared what the school is doing to promote community involvement and service in the preschool program.
She said since the preschool is in an industrial court opportunities for developing relationships in the neighborhood are limited, so they have partnered with Lutheran Senior Services for a few events. On Halloween they dressed up and went trick or treating in their offices.
For the holiday season, they paired up with them to do a food drive to support Feed My People.
Edmond said the children learned about categorizing as they sorted the food. “They loved watching the piles of food growing in the hallway, showing them that if we all work together we can do a lot!”
On December 8 and 9 the kids brought their food to Lutheran Senior Services in wagons and carts to add it to the food collected in their offices, again showing the children the benefits of collective giving.
“At BECC we believe that nurturing and building community helps to cultivate a warm, stable, and secure environment. We believe that fostering these qualities at a young age helps to develop responsibility to the community, and outward thinking for the future generation of Brentwood citizens,” Edmond said.
