An article about the Big Bend Quarry, in operation in Maplewood around 1917, prompted a comment with a link to an article about a quarry in Brentwood, from the Brentwood Historical Society.
This quarry was operated by Thomas Madden until around 1914, was mined further by the Bompart family, was the town dump, and eventually filled in, according the Brentwood Historical Society.
The quarry was in the area now bordered by Manchester Road on the north, Brazeau Avenue on the west, Mary Avenue on the east, and Pendleton Avenue on the south.

I remember looking across Manchester from the old St. Mary Magdalen School building (not the new one) and it was just across from us. It used to smoke a lot and even catch on fire sometime. I am guessing it was being filled in, in those days…..it was in the late 40’s and early 50’s. I graduated from 8th grade there in 1953. Thinking about it, it had to have been a little east of where the school was….probably directly across from the newer school.
Great photo! Must have been miserable jobs.
Diana – according to the Brentwood Historical Society (and now added to this article), it was in the area now bordered by Manchester Road on the north, Brazeau Avenue on the west, Mary Avenue on the east, and Pendleton Avenue on the south.
Where was the Brentwood quarry located?
