Richmond Heights received recent media mentions for continued thefts from cars, and one that was stolen.
Richmond Heights Police reported that during the evening of Oct. 6 several unlocked vehicles were ransacked in the area of Arch Terrace, Surrey Hills and the Sheridan Hills neighborhoods.
Beginning in late September police report at least 19 vehicles have been involved.
“[They’re] taking things such as wallets, cell phones, laptops,” Detective Sergeant Gerry Rohr told KSDK. ”Most of the time, nothing was taken, just rummaged through — but it’s a real inconvenience for our residents.”
Rohr said most of the cars were left unlocked overnight, often with valuables left inside.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that a man trying to steal underwear, lamp oil and candlesticks from a Walmart in South County crashed in a used car lot in the Lemay area on Tuesday night. It flipped and caught fire.
The car, a Lincoln, had been stolen in Richmond Heights, St. Louis County Police Officer Shawn McGuire told the Post-Dispatch. Police say they found a loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol inside the car.
The suspect has been in and out of Missouri prisons since at least 1990. He was charged with forgery in Richmond Heights in 1992.
