As of January, 2014, Strayer University abandoned its Brentwood location along with others in the Midwest, the St. Louis Business Journal reported.
The large sign facing north from the top floors of 1600 S. Brentwood Boulevard will remain for now, however.
Brentwood Planning and Zoning discussed the difficulties of having the sign removed at it’s June 11 meeting.
City Planner Justin Wyse said the university still holds a lease on the floors, so they have the legal right to keep the sign.
“So you can rent space and put a sign on the building and not occupy the space at all. That to me sounds absurd,” committee member, John Nuernberger said.
Wyse said due to changes in the city’s sign regulations, if the city pushed for removal it would violate the “message substitution claus” and put the city at legal risk.
He said the city’s best option is to help Strayer get the space subleased. If they sublease over a certain amount the sign has to be removed, but they’re not to that point yet.
“I just wish they had moved in,” Nuernberger said.
