Katherine Switzer, the first woman to run the Boston Marathon, in 1967, will speak in St. Louis at Maryville University on Oct. 19. She ran the race after her coach insisted a marathon was too far to run for a “fragile woman.”
Race official Jock Semple attempted to remove Switzer’s number during the race, but her boyfriend, Tom Miller, running with her, pushed him away. It was another five years before women were officially allowed to compete.
Switzer is now an author, television commentator, speaker and marathon runner. She was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2011.
Girls on the Run, in St. Louis, is sponsoring the talk. Click here for info and tickets.
