Emergency workers closed roads and evacuated homes in the area of Sutton and Flora avenues Monday afternoon when a gas line break threatened the neighborhood. No injuries were reported.
Update: Maplewood Captain Peter Marsac said traffic contractors punctured a two-inch, high-pressure gas main underground in the 7300 block of Flora Avenue; gas could be heard escaping into the open air. Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution. Fire crews were kept on hand in case of fire.
Marsac said there were six crews on the scene — twice as many as would normally be there — because the hot day required firefighters, in full turnout gear, to be given breaks in an air-conditioned Bi-State bus.
It took Laclede Gas about three hours to repair the punctured line.
Thanks to all our brave firefighters on a really hot day. It’s great to live in a community with such fast responders that work hard to protect our homes and lives.
And the police!!
I drove by on my way home from work and wondered why the street was closed. That is why I like 40 South News, it lets me know what is going on around town.
