Sophia Rivera’s javelin throw of 180 feet 4 inches in April, which qualified her for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Track and Field, would have been good enough for sixth at the trials, as reported by Heavy.com, though Rivera injured her elbow and withdrew before the competition.
However the throw that qualified her for the trials wouldn’t have been enough for her to go to the Olympics. The Olympic standard is 203-5, which a competitor must have thrown during the qualifying window that started in May 2015.
That was the case with the woman who finished second in the trials, Hannah Carson, who threw 190-11 in the trials but hadn’t made the Olympic standard in the qualifying window so didn’t make the team.
Maggie Malone, a senior at Texas A&M, won the trials with a throw of 60.84 meters (199-7).
