A current Maplewood restaurant owner now has plans to add ice cream to the neighborhood’s offerings.

Mike McLaughlin, owner of The Crow’s Nest and Blind Tiger, in Maplewood, isn’t revealing many details, but he said he “definitely” is going to open an ice cream shop.

He plans to make the shop kid-friendly, and offer curly dogs (hot dogs) along with the ice cream.

McLaughlin has partners that include a long-time area business owner and an existing maker of artisan ice cream. He’s looking at a centralized Maplewood location. Nothing is signed yet.

  1. My grandpa Chas. Fortado owned the Priscilla Shop. I remember watching him make those delicious popsicles and ice cream. He used big vats of cream, had to close it when he passed away from cancer.

    • Hi Pati Brewer,
Do you know the year The Priscilla shop was closed. I remember it as a kid in the 50s but do not remember when it ceased operation. Nice to read a memory from the owner’s family.

    • Pati Brewer…..I was just reminiscing about the Priscilla Shop in a comment in the 11/14 or 15 Forty South! I grew up on Maple Ave, in the 50’s, and your grandpa’s shop is a cherished memory from our neighborhood. I’m glad you have good memories also.

      • It’s me AGAIN! I just scrolled down and saw that I also posted about the shop about a year and a half ago, when the new shop was first being discussed. HA! Jill

  2. Does anyone else remember the wonderful little family-run restaurant on Manchester which offered a delicious Sunday brunch and homey atmosphere — closed a few years ago–they tried to make a go of offering ice cream–

  3. That will be wonderful! I definitely think maplewood can support an ice cream shop! Hot fudge sundaes sound delish!

  4. When I was a child, growing up in Maplewood, there was an ice cream shop called The Priscilla Shop on Sutton Ave. It was located across from and about a half block South of the Loop….now the Loop Park. If I close my eyes and take a deep breath, I can still smell the rich fragrances wafting through those front screen doors. In addition to ice cream they offered home made popsicles of a rainbow of brilliant colors. I believe the new shop will be a great addition to our community, and hope it will help families create some rich memories of life in Maplewood.
