Maplewood chosen for fastest internet service

AT&T chose Maplewood in the end of 2016 as one of the few cities in the St. Louis area for its newest, fastest internet service.

In November 2016, AT&T began offering high-speed fiber internet — called AT&T Fiber — to parts of Maplewood, Kirkwood, Swansea, Edwardsville, and Webster Groves, the St. Louis Business Journal reported. Other areas already had it. AT&T expands the fiber service into areas where consumers demand it.

The faster internet — 1000 Mbps (millions of bits per second, or megabits per second) — allows downloading an entire high-definition movie in about 30 seconds, CBS St. Louis reported.

St. Louis has miles of fiber already laid underneath its streets, but the majority of it is not being used, according to the Business Journal.

  1. We tried the digital AT&T. They couldn’t get it to work in our home. (Maplewood) We had thirteen service calls to try and get it to work. Finally, we ended up having the hard line reinstalled. So now we have two accounts one for the phone line and one for the Internet. I don’t think this is progress. We feel we are being penalized for there screw ups.

  2. Is American Tunneling & Toilets going to roll this out a municipality at a time? If they were serious about doing upgrades on their network there would be a much larger push on their part to provide service. They are probably targeting places where the defection rate is highest to Charter. If you want to see this service in your neighborhood, dump AT&T in favor of Charter’s faster service. This technology is over almost 2 decades old and they are just getting around to nibbling around the edges of rolling it out. They are only interested in squeezing out as much revenue as possible from their existing (taxpayer funded from the AT&T monopoly days) network.
