Good coffee can be found at many shops within a few blocks in Maplewood, but only one made the Riverfront Times’ recent list of “75 reasons we love St. Louis in 2016.”
Stone Spiral got the shout-out in the RFT, for being an “old school subversive” coffee shop — compared to “Seattle in the grungy 1990s, Vienna in the 1910s — when coffee shops were places to go plot the revolution.”
The RFT says obsessing over every last detail of coffee ruined it all. Stone Spiral’s coffee is “fair trade and single estate and blah blah blah” — ”but but the conversations overheard are so much better.”
They say it looks like it was decorated by “aging hippies.” Actually, an artist/art collector/retired architect had a large part in it.
Democrats (not Marxists), painters, knitters, board gamers, web publishers, various students and parents with kids are some of the regulars. Every Wednesday one of the best open mic nights in the area runs from 8 to 11 p.m. See Stone Spiral on Facebook.
See the full post in the Riverfront Times.
The Side Project Cellar, in Maplewood, made the list too: Because Side Project Is One of the Best Places in the U.S. to Enjoy Craft Beer
Treasure Aisles Antique Mall, Big Bend Antique Gallery and Miriam Switching Post were also featured: Because Our Resale Shops Can’t Be Beat; also Best Place to Sing Karaoke: Double D’s and Best Local Brewery: Schlafly
The Spiral is a treasure. Long may you run.
I am happy to have Stone Spiral as a neighbor on my street. Great place.
Congrats, SS!
