The Maplewood City Council will consider demolishing an apartment building on the east edge of the city in its meeting on Tuesday.  An ordinance on if and where to allow tattoo parlors in the city is on the agenda but may be tabled.

The following items are on the agenda for Tuesday.

Item 6: A public hearing
to hear citizens’ comments on a request by Maplewood to amend the zoning code to allow tattoo and piercing studios in the Light Manufacturing Zoning District.

Item 10: A resolution authorizing the city manager to accept the low bid of Aalco Wrecking of $44,470 to demolish the 12-unit apartment complex at 2270-2272 Yale Avenue. The building is just north of Manchester Avenue on the east side of Yale. It was built in 1940, according to St. Louis County records.

Item 11: A resolution authorizing the city manager to accept the high bid of Vortex Aquatic Play Solutions of $14,260 for a new water feature for the Maplewood Family Aquatic Center. The new feature will replace the whale slide  and is known as a 5-bucket play feature. The city staff recommends the high bid because of the sturdy construction, it is visually appealing, and it has buckets instead of cones, which means more water can be dumped on children.

Item 12: A ordinance to amend the Maplewood Zoning Code to allow tattoo and piercing studios in the Light Manufacturing (LM) Zoning District. City staff is suggesting that this be tabled because two members of the council will be absent. In the Nov. 12 council meeting, several council members expressed the opinion that tattoo studios don’t need to be restricted to an LM zone, but a consensus wasn’t reached on where they should be allowed. It was tabled.

  1. I’m sad to hear the building on Yale will be demolished. I’ve been hoping it could be saved and rehabbed. It’s a beautiful–albeit rundown–building. Is there any other possibility for this building, other than demolition?
