Maplewood Ward 3 council member, Barry Greenberg, attended a conference last week to learn more about governing a municipality. He sent the following report to 40 South. Greenberg will be a candidate for mayor of Maplewood in the April 2017 elections.
Last week I attended the National League of Cities City Summit conference in Pittsburgh.
I had the opportunity to attend classes, seminars, presentations and workshops on a variety of topics that have an impact on our community and cities of all sizes.
The workshop entitled Value Based Leadership and Public Accountability was the most helpful that I attended.
A mobile workshop took us to East Liberty, an area that has made a dramatic comeback from a declining condition. “Big Ideas for Small Cities” just reinforced to me that Maplewood is already on the forefront of innovative thinking.
The AARP session helped me formulate additional ideas as to how we can address the needs of aging population going forward.
There were other programs and networking opportunities to compare problems and solutions with other elected officials.
I appreciate that my position on City Council allows me the chance to attend Municipal League of Metro St. Louis, Missouri Municipal League and National League of Cities events that allow me to improve my skills in serving the citizens of Maplewood.
