The Turner Center for the Arts, in Maplewood, has gone through such a transformation in the past 18 months that they’ve decided to change their name.
“We see every day the inspiration, the courage, the growth, and that’s why it’s a natural unfoldment to change our name to what it truly represents — Artists First — disabilities second,” Artists First executive director, Sheila Suderwalla said on Tuesday.
The group has moved a larger studio at 7190 Manchester Road, added staff members and new programs. Their board and group of volunteers is growing, according to a press release.
Maplewood resident, Jeannine Henry, runs the supported employment program. She teaches life skills, independent living skills and employment skills through the arts. Suderwalla said participation in that program has increased by about 70 percent.
She said they’re currently fundraising for a program for veterans to express their experiences through the arts.
“We’re growing, and we just need to catch up financially, because everything we do here is subsidized,” Suderwalla said. “We rely on donations to offer what we offer. We have a great staff. Just onward and upward.”
